Midsummer in the Bay Area

Midsummer is Scandinavia’s most popular festival (along with Christmas)!

On the Friday closest to the actual summer solstice, school is out and nature has burst into life in the Nordic countries,

and the sun never seems to set at this time of year. In Sweden, there are a great number of traditional festivities going on.

This major holiday is usually celebrated in the heart of nature, as Swedes head out to the countryside to enjoy food, drink, games,

and of course dancing around the Maypole.

Although the sun might set a little earlier here, there are several celebrations of this wonderful holiday

and of Nordic culture here in the Bay Area!

The Consulate General of Sweden has compiled a list of Midsummer Celebrations this year.
NOTE – since midsummer is not a holiday in the US, most celebrations in the Bay Area are scheduled to Saturday, June 20th (Midsommardagen). Here are some examples of celebrations open to the public:

121st Midsummer celebration at Sveadal
Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 10:00 am – 11:30 pm

Schedule of events:

10:00 am: Sveadal Opens, Swedish Boutiques, Pool Open until 4:00 pm
10:00 am: Maypole Decorating
10:00 am-3 pm: Sveadal Kaffe, Clubhouse Patio
11:30 am-4 pm: Midsummer Café (Basketball Court)
12:00 pm: Raising of the Maypole, Children’s Dances
1:00 pm and 3:00 pm: Walking Tour of Sveadal – meet at the Maypole
4:45 pm: Midsummer Prelude
5:00 pm: Midsummer Program and Dancing Around the Maypole
7:00 pm-8:00 pm: Dinner at the Clubhouse
(Only 200 tickets sold at the event, adults: $15 – Children 12&U: $10)
7:30 pm-1:30 pm: Dancing under the stars

General information

Admission includes the use of the facilities and picnic areas. Admission does NOT include dinner and other food purchases. Parking is free, but limited. Please carpool. No ATM machines available, please, no pets. High fire danger – fires strictly prohibited!

LINNEA LODGE #504
Midsummer Festival June 20 at 11:00 am
Come join the Linnea Lodge #504 in their Midsummer Festival at the home of Thelma Jorgensen at 360 Hoff Road near Kenwood. The activities start at 11:00 am with the decorating of the Maypole followed by a traditional Swedish potluck lunch around noon time. Come hungry and ready to have a fun time!

Everyone please bring a main dish, or a salad, or a dessert along with your own plates, silverware and any special drink you may desire.
